Trout Pond Forest -- Lyme, NH
Thursday, June 30th, 2011
Leaders: Peg Ackerson and Blake Allison
Twelve people were on hand to walk Lyme's Trout Pond Forest. Twenty-six species were recorded. Trout Pond Forest offers a diverse mix of early successional forest, mature hardwoods and conifers, wetland and pond habitats. The mile walk into the pond is rewarded by the chance to enjoy an undeveloped, woodland water body and sweeping views of Smarts Mountain to the east. In addition to the birds, numbers of the walkers were interested in the area's abundant and diverse plant communities.
The following species were observed. Those marked with an "*" were seen by part of the group that decided to bushwhack from the pond over to the wetland area.
hooded merganser, chimney swift, yellow-bellied sapsucker, alder flycatcher "*", great-crested flycatcher "*", eastern wood-pewee, red-eyed vireo, blue jay, common raven, black-capped chickadee, white-breasted nuthatch, winter wren, veery, hermit thrush, cedare waxwing "*", black-throated blue warbler, yellow-rumped warbler, black-throated-green warbler, blackburnian warbler "*", ovenbird, common yellowthroat "*", scarlet tanager, swamp sparrow "*", dark-eyed junco, baltimore oriole and purple finch
Silver-Bordered Fritillary and Cone Flower (P. Ackerson)
River Road, Lyme
Sixteen birders joined walk leader George Clark on a lovely summer morning for a leisurely outing along the Connecticut River on River Rd. in Lyme. Because a section of the road walked is closed due to erosion damage, very few cars were encountered during the hike making it very easy to hear bird songs with the luxury of having plenty of time to observe. Conditions were scattered clouds, humid, with temperatures near 70.

Lake Runnemede in Windsor, VT
Chris Rimmer of VT county Bird Quest and George Clark of NH Audubon's Mascoma Chapter hosted 15 particpants on a walk at Windsor's Lake Runnemede and vicinity.
Forty-five species were counted. Among the highlights in the waterbird class were canada geese, a great blue and little green herons, numerous wood ducks and a couple of kingfishers.
While many chimney swifts were counted, not a single swallow species was seen. Four woodpecker species were observed including downy, hairy, red-bellied and flicker. Members of the flycatcher family recorded included alder and willow. Also counted were six warbler species, common yellow-throat seen and heard most often. Other notables included swamp sparrows a rose-breasted grosbeak and a baltimore oriole.
The day's most intriguing encounter was a cuckoo heard and then a fleeting glimpse of one flying. The group could not agree if it was the same bird, whether it was two of the same species or whether two different species had been noted.
